The Follies

Video animations are created to represent the progress of becoming — a progress that architectural elements like doors and windows make random geometrical blocks visually become architecture. These FOLLIES are unrestrained combinations of blocks. They become seemingly architectural pieces by re-adapting,  re-shuffling, and re-orienting the regulated Revit family blocks.

Final pieces in this animation are rendered as architectural pieces, but they are still not stable standing building structures. The toy-like objects created in this virtual game animation call into the question of the definiation of “architecture” -- Is that an inhabitable space? An approachable space? A space with doors and windows? Or simply a folly attains its function ?

The game “Builder” visualized digital manipulatable architecture in the virtual world. It is introduced without the “undo” key, that the unsatisfied result would be collapsed to start over by clicking the “delete” key. This game visualized a process of renewal (by applying materials and cubes), recursion (by introducing openings, floors and stairs) and terminal collapse in “delete”, represented an endless loop of producing unrepeatable ontogenetic objects.

Technologies today allow people to easily digital customize objects or living spaces by manipulating architectural elements and objects. Through operations like assembling, disassembling and re-assembling in individualized approach, architecture forms and spaces can be customized and shaped in endless real-time searching through digital modeling tools.
